The annual Sports and boat shows are swinging into the lime-light once again.

This year, Sector Commander Captain Scott Ferguson has asked us to really emphasis the use of the life-jacket.

lifejacket

These shows are a great way to get a jump start on doing that by simply wearing a life jacket when volunteering to stand a watch at these shows.

The same holds true during upcoming boater safety classes.

An instructor wearing a life-jacket can go a long way towards impressing the boater/fisherman and convince them that wearing one might well save their life.

REMEMBER

A failure to wear a life-jacket could cost a life.

Wear It!

It's the cool thing to do!

Project GLIMSS

(The Great Lakes Integrated Maritime Safety System)

Project GLIMSS- The "Great Lakes Integrated Maritime Safety System" is a series of 9th Coast Guard District initiatives, supported in full by the 9th District/ Eastern Region Coast Guard Auxiliary. These annual initiatives include a series of issues and concerns specifically focused at fostering safety and education as they pertain to boating, fishing, and outdoor recreational activity in general.

"Operation Flotation"

-Wear a Life Jacket-

With the vacation season, boating and fishing activities out on our waterways become more and more routine

The US Coast Guard says that wearing a Life Jacket could make the difference between life and death

Stats 3.jpg (41024 bytes)

So why Are PFDs So Important?

More than 90% of deaths in boating are from drowning. And 80% of those drowning victims were not wearing a personal floatation device. It's important to wear a PFD! They protect against drowning and can help protect against hypothermia - because exposure to cold water is another major killer in boating accidents.

The five types of life-jackets

link button.jpg (1894 bytes)

When Buying a Life Vest Check for Coast Guard approved label. A snug fit. Check weight and size on the label and try the PFD on your child. Pick up your child by the shoulders of the PFD; the child’s chin and ears won’t slip through a proper fit.
Head support for younger children. A well designed PFD will support the child’s head when the child is in the water.
A strap between the legs for younger children. This is a good feature because it helps prevent the vest from coming off.
Comfort and appearance. This is especially important for teens, who are less likely to wear a PFD.

-Remember-

When it comes to a life-jacket
